Schools health survey: what are young people really like?

In 1977, John Balding began the Schools Health Education Unit (SHEU) and started SHEU school surveys. John wanted to find ways of assessing young people's behaviours and give useful health-related behaviour profiles to education and health colleagues.

Wiltshire's happier and healthier young people

Thanks to our colleague Nick Bolton for this link about Wiltshire's young people published in the Wiltshire Gazette and Herald.
Results from surveys by the Schools Health Education Unit (SHEU) show that Wiltshire's young people have much healthier lifestyles and higher rates of self esteem compared to the national average.
Carolyn Godfrey, Corporate Director of Wiltshire Council, said: "This survey shows how the health of our children and young people is improving and the work of schools and partners is key to this."

Sources of information and support for young people

@ncbtweets conclude from their survey of 263 young people:

  • young people (are) more likely to turn to parents (62%) for health advice than internet (47%)
  • over a quarter (28%) of young people feel uncomfortable visiting GP over health issues

Do girls or boys eat more fresh fruit?

New SHEU data, from 1999-2010, show that girls, more than boys, and 10-11 year olds, more than older children, report eating fresh fruit 'on most days'.
