School survey experts
Millions of questionnaires from SHEU have been completed by pupils since the Unit was founded in 1977.
We have the answers to thousands of questions, including:
- What did our pupils have for breakfast this morning?
- What are they worried about?
- How much money do they have to spend, and what do they spend it on?
- Do they think our PSHE lessons are useful?
Schools will get a detailed book of tables and a comparison report. [Click on the thumbnails for a larger version.]

Our parent/carer surveys have mostly been perception surveys rather than lifestyle surveys, although we have done both. They can be completed on paper or online, and can be customised to suit your situation. See also:

We also do surveys with school staff: /content/page/example-staff-survey

Online Surveys
Surveys can be completed on paper or online.
We launched our online survey service in 2004 and at the time we had the idea that nearly all our survey work would be online by now. While the proportion of work online has increased, some clients find that paper questionnaires are still more convenient for them. But what are the benefits of doing a survey online?
Benefits of the Online Survey
- Greater Student Access: All students in a year group can take part, not just a sample
- Instant access to results at the end of the survey period
- Facilities for instant printing of results in different formats for presentations. e.g. graphs
- Own school/college figures can be compared with the group of others who complete online
- It is an intelligent questionnaire, students only see questions relevant to them
- Graphics are more friendly
- Option for personal health feedback for students
- Website links for students who finish early
- Telephone help support

SHEU OATs [Online Analysis Tools]
SHEU have designed OATs, after consultations with clients, to meet the needs of authorities for accurate and fast survey information. Via a secure login, the results from OATs are accessible via all web browsers, without the need to download software, and levels of access are tailored to local requirements.
SHEU OATs
- Flexible eg. clients choose who sees survey results
- Results compared with the main survey or a subset of the results eg. schools can access their own results and compare themselves to similar schools
- Choices over information displayed eg. you choose to filter the results to show age, location, gender, FSM and smoking
- Compare locations, gender, issues etc. and trends eg. examine a range of issues over time when you have more than one set of data
- Export data for further analysis eg. Excel or other software and paste into your text processor or presentation software

Angela Balding - Survey Manager
Angela Balding is the Survey Manager at SHEU and is your first point of contact for all enquiries about our survey services.
Please email Angela or contact by telephone on 01392 667272.
Angela joined the unit in 1999 after ten years as a primary school teacher with experience of working with children in the 4 to 12 age range. Her main role within the unit is the liaison with key funding partners and project managers to ensure for the overall smooth running of each piece of work. She has also written curriculum materials to support SHEU's work with primary schools.
Angela is author of SHEU's Fit to Succeed Programme. This is an ongoing study aimed at increasing the levels of physical activity in young people through a partnership between the young people of Exeter and public and private sector agencies. The project has developed a monitoring tool that is currently providing valuable evidence for the impact of the School Sport Co-ordinator programme.
She represents SHEU in the Water for Health Alliance, part of Water UK. Her interest in the water debate has arisen from the evidence emerging from Fit to Succeed about the provision of water in schools and the impact that small changes can make.
When not at work, she is exercised well by her dogs and is never very far from a hockey pitch.
