Who commissions SHEU surveys?
SHEU surveys have been commissioned by:

  • Healthy School Managers and Co-ordinators
  • Local Authorities
  • Public Health
  • Drug Action Teams
  • Local Partnerships to promote Physical Activity
  • Joint LA/PCT commissioning groups

as well as individual schools and colleges.
 
Who completes SHEU surveys?
We have surveyed almost everyone:

  • Pupils and Students

  • Staff in Schools and the NHS

  • employers of young people

 
What questions can we ask?
We have a variety of off-the-shelf questionnaires, from short pupils perceptions surveys to longer lifestyle surveys, and we can customise each of them to make sure you are asking exactly the questions for which you need answers.
 
How much does it cost?
Costs can be reduced by using a shorter questionnaire, asking fewer subjects, doing the survey online and using an existing questionnaire.

  • To do an off-the-shelf 4-sides-of A4 questionnaire with 60 pupils in 10 primary schools online might be around £500+VAT.
  • To do a customised 20-sides-of A4 questionnaire with 8000 pupils in 30 secondary schools on paper will cost over £20,000+VAT.

The only thing we charge for separately is writing a custom report with you.  It's hard to predict how much this will cost, depending on how long and how detailed you want the report to be.  To see what sort of reports you can receive, see our Reports page.
We can organise printing for you; we do not add a handling fee but pass on the amount on the printer's bill.
 
How quickly can it all happen?
We can put up an existing questionnaire for completion on our website in a few minutes, but a more typical timescale for a district-wide survey is about six months from start to finish:

  1. Study design agreed: number of schools, number of pupils in each school
  2. Questionnaire content agreed
  3. Schools contacted
  4. Seminars arranged
  5. Survey conducted in schools online and on paper
  6. Paper questionnaires processed
  7. Reports returned to schools

Frequently Asked Questions - Pupils and Students

What's the point?
We are doing this questionnaire because we want some information that will help our school make sure we give you a programme of health education that is right for you and other people in the school.  The information will also help the NHS in planning health care and health education for young people.
Who is behind it?
The survey is being organised by the local NHS, Children's Services and other organisations concerned with young people.
Our school, along with several others, has agreed to take part in this survey for young people. 
The survey is being organised through SHEU, an independent research organisation in Exeter who have been working with young people since 1977.
What is this survey?
The survey is about your health and habits, and what you think about some health and social issues.  It is one of the biggest health surveys in the country, and each year since 1986 tens of thousands of people your age have taken part.
Do I have to answer every question? Do I have to be honest?
It is really important that the information collected must be accurate; therefore we want only your honest answers.  For example, if you did not wash your hair yesterday, even though you normally do every day, please tell us the true answer for yesterday.  
You need not feel vulnerable by being honest:

  • The questionnaire is anonymous, which means that you don't have to put your name or address anywhere on the survey.
  • The questionnaire is confidential, which means that only you will see your answers.  No one in this school will look at your answers, and at the end of the session, all the booklets will be collected together and sent away, like in an examination.  All the completed questionnaires will be destroyed in Exeter.
  • The questionnaire is not a test and you can ask for help whenever you need it.  If you have someone come to your place to help, make sure they can't see your answers.
  • The results that come back to the school will show only the overall results for the boys and girls in each year group.  No one can be identified in the computer printout.

Of course, you can leave out any question that you really don't want to answer, but we hope you will want to take part and enjoy the exercise.
If you do not want to take part in this study at all, please let your teacher know.
Who gets to see my answers?
The results of the survey will be sent back to the school but there is no way that anyone else can find out your answers. 
We also hope that you will have a chance to discuss some of the overall results in class lessons.

"As a Deputy Head in a large secondary school I was involved in taking part in a city wide health and wellbeing survey over a period of six years. Completing the survey every two years grew in importance year on year, with the final cycle having a major impact on our SDP, PHSE curriculum, Ofsted outcomes and governor understanding.
Over the six year period we moved from a small sample in two tutor groups filling in a paper survey to two year groups completing an online survey. The reports produced give graphical analysis of a wide range of issues. As a result of the survey we increased the number of PSHE workshop days for students to address issues such as smoking, drug and alcohol awareness, anti-bullying workshops. The surveys helped Governors make a positive informed decision to allow Brook Advisory Clinic nurses on site to support students.
As a result of taking part and using the evidence provided we were able to offer more support for students which had a direct impact on improved attendance and outcomes."

“(The SHEU survey) was very, very useful. It gave us reassurance we weren’t missing a trick. For example not many pupils in the sample year groups were taking illegal drugs, which re-enforced our opinions. But the survey also raised issues and flagged some things up. We discovered that some of our girls weren’t eating enough – the percentage of girls in our school not eating lunch the day before the survey was higher than the county average. There were other concerns too, specifically around cigarettes, alcohol and attendance.
The school used this data and took a number of actions to address it. More female peer mentors were put in place and the school asked NEXUS (the Extended Schools service) for help, so they developed a programme for girls which addressed their eating patterns, healthy eating, sex education and self-esteem issues.
We ran an anti-bullying group for Year 9 as a preventative measure, based upon data provided by our current Year 10 students.
The travel data revealed that a high number of pupils took the car to school so we involved the BIKE-IT scheme who ran assemblies, brought in their bikes (including one with a pedal-powered smoothie maker!), and raised awareness of health and green issues.
The information about how happy the students were with their lives raised some concerns as far fewer girls were as happy as the boys, so work was done around developing aspirations, role-models and self-esteem."
